About the AppealThe church bells are important to the people of Upper and Lower Boddington. They have not been rung since 2004 and as a result 11 local couples have gone without the bells on their Wedding Day. The community has also been deprived of the traditional sound of the church bells, something integral to the British life. The church St John the Baptist, Boddington is an important place of worship and a historical building dating from the 13th Century. The earliest bell was cast in 1621, when James I was King of England. The last refurbishment work carried out on the bells took place over 100 years ago. The combined cost of repairing the church tower, refurbishing the bells and purchasing a new bell will be in the region of £115,000. The village has been very lucky to have been awarded a grant from English Heritage for £40,000 for the repair of the church tower. Therefore the villagers are launching an appeal to raise the remaining £75,000 to bring the sound of the bells back to Boddington. It is intended that the fundraising will be enjoyable and involve all members of the village through a range of events. The first activity will be a Treasure Hunt and BBQ on Sunday June 8th.
